Making Sense Of Early Decision Applications

High school students and their parents continue to be baffled by early application and early decision at selective colleges. While most colleges do not have such programs, a small number of highly selective colleges do, and they may accept a majority of their applicants in the fall of senior year.

Early decision means that students apply to a college in the fall of senior year, and state that if accepted, they will enroll. This can double the chance of admission to a top school, but cuts down on the choices students will have. Early application means only that a college will consider you in the Fall, and does not bind you to attend if accepted.
