Major Reconstruction To Take Place On I-96 In 2014
LIVONIA (WWJ) - You might want to start planning some alternate routes now, because a portion of I-96 between Telegraph and Newburgh Roads will shut down completely in 2014 for reconstruction.
Business owners like Wah Wong - who owns the Firearm Exchange Gunrange on the Service Drive - is worried about the closure that will last several months.
"Yes, this is most definitely going to affect our business. We're trying to still advertise ... try to still get people in this area," said Wong.
Wong estimates that his business could be off by 30 percent during the closure.
While some drives are concerned about the closure, not Joe Mooradian of Livonia.
"There are a lot of spots that need it right now - there are a lot of good potholes in that stretch, a lot of traffic coming from east and from west I don't think it would be that big of a deal to take the service drive to get past Telegraph," said Mooradian.
Sherry Brooks of Canton just heard about the planned closure:
"I think it's going to be horrible, there is not going to be any easy way to get to Birmingham, Southfield, you know, anything that was easy before," said Brooks.
The reconstruction project is expected to cost $150 million.
