Macomb Township Stabbing Suspect Arrested
MACOMB TWP. (WWJ) - An elderly Macomb Township woman who suffered a vicious stabbing may be one step closer to justice as a potential suspect has been arrested in New York. The 27-year-old suspect is now facing charges in two states.
Police captured Joseph Renier in New York after a multi-state chase. Renier failed to stop for police after being clocked doing 65 in a 55 zone. He's wanted for not only the stabbing of a Macomb Township woman, but also for a string of home invasions in Macomb County. That includes a break-in at a Grosse Pointe Farms home where he acquired the Acura he was driving at the time of his arrest.
Macomb County authorities say they will wait for Renier to go through New York's criminal justice system before extraditing him back to Michigan to face charges here.
The 69-year-old victim, who was found with two knives in her neck, remains hospitalized after surgery. She was attacked during a home invasion, but was able to call 9-1-1 and give a description of her assailant to police.
"She's progressing and getting better. We're hoping that maybe at some point this weekend or next week that we're able to go sit down with her and get an interview," says Macomb County Sheriff Tony Wickersham.
The woman's purse was stolen and two rings were taken as well in the robbery. Wickersham says the man's image was caught on surveillance video at a business after he'd hitched a ride near the woman's home.
