Macomb Township Man Arrested In Case Of Vandalized Gravestones
MACOMB TOWNSHIPS (WWJ) - A 22-year-old Macomb Township man is behind bars after he allegedly vandalized dozens of gravestones.
Macomb County Sheriff's officials say Tyler Bryant toppled 26 headstones at Immanuel Lutheran Church Wednesday evening, at 21 Mile Road and Romeo Plank in Macomb Township.
Bryant, who matched a witness' description of the vandal, was spotted outside a business across the street from the cemetery. After a brief foot chase, deputies had to use a stun gun to subdue him, officials said.
Bryant was handcuffed behind his back and placed into the rear of a patrol vehicle where he allegedly continued to resist arrest, struggling until he kicked a window out of the patrol vehicle.
He was eventually, "re-secured in a different patrol vehicle", deputies said, and taken to the Macomb County Jail.
Bryant was charged Thursday with malicious destruction of police property, malicious destruction of tombs and resisting arrest.
Authorities haven't commented on a possible motive.
This is the second recent case of headstone vandalism in metro Detroit. Two teens were arrested last week after they allegedly caused nearly $55,000 worth of damage at a northern Oakland County cemetery.
