Macomb Sheriff's Deputy Suspected In Embezzlement
ROMEO (WWJ/AP) - Authorities say a Macomb County Sheriff's deputy is one of several people suspected of embezzling money from the Romeo Lions Club.
Investigators say one person linked to the embezzlement case is a female veteran of the Macomb County Sheriff's Department who was a member of the Lions Club during the time period the alleged crimes took place.
Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said the unidentified deputy remains on the job, but in a new assignment. He said Romeo police are handling the investigation and his department will wait until the probe either takes a turn or a warrant has been issued before moving to the "next level."
The Romeo Police Department launched the investigation about two weeks ago when they received a complaint from the club that $20,000 was missing from their treasury.
Investigators say they are also looking at several other people in connection with the missing money, including a sheriff's office employee. A statement released by Romeo Police said the department expects to have the case wrapped up within the week for presentation to the Prosecutor's Office.
The Lions Club is responsible for putting together the Peach Festival, Romeo's largest annual event held every Labor Day weekend.
No criminal charges have yet been filed.
