Macomb County Officials Seek Volunteers To Deliver Emergency Food To Seniors In Wake Of Flooding

MACOMB COUNTY (WWJ) -- The Meals on Wheels program in Macomb County has been hampered by cancellations lately due to recent flooding.

Now, officials from the Macomb County Community Services Agency's Office of  Senior Services are seeking 100 volunteer drivers to deliver emergency food boxes to homebound senior citizens.

Boxes will be distributed September 13 to all of the roughly 1500 Meals on Wheels home-bound senior citizens in Macomb County.

The boxes will contain shelf-stable meals for use when severe weather prevents normal delivery. The flooding caused the program to be cancelled two days last week.

Volunteers will be asked to pick up the boxes between 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. at the Macomb County warehouse, located on Vic Wertz Dr. near Hall Rd. and Groesbeck Highway. Each route will take about two hours to complete and volunteers must use their personal vehicles.

"Many of our residents were hit hard by the floods," Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel said. "These meals are so important to a lot of our seniors who rely on programs like Meals on Wheels."

The Meals on Wheels program allows seniors to remain in their homes and live with dignity while receiving regular, nutritious meals. For more information, contact MCCSA's Office of Senior Services at 586-469-5228 or sign up online at www.macombgov.org/seniorservices/mowvolunteer.htm.
