Macomb County Girl Shot By Dad
The Macomb County Prosecutor's office will decide if charges will be filed against a father who accidentally shot his 12-year-old daughter.
Sheriff Captain Tony Wickersham says the 40-year-old man was working on his recently purchased handgun when he pulled the trigger, thinking it was unloaded.
"The number one rule is that you treat every firearm as if it's loaded. So, you shouldn't be pulling the trigger unless it's down range or on a target. Guns are dangerous and shouldn't be around children," Wikersham said.
But, should the father face charges? Wikersham said that's not up to the police.
"In any investigation, especially a shooting, we take a look at the circumstances and collect the evidence and do our report. As policy we will contact the Prosecutor's office and run the facts by them," he said.
The bullet hit the girl's wrist, then went into her leg. She was treated at the hospital and released.
Police are not releasing the names of the people involved.
