Macomb County Deputy Involved In Shooting
MACOMB TWP. (WWJ) - Authorities say a Macomb County Sheriff's Deputy was involved in a shooting while responding to a reported theft in a residential area.
Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said the situation unfolded just after 2 a.m. Tuesday, when they received a 911 call from a woman who said she thought someone was trying to remove something from her home, located in the 49000 block of Maplewood Lane in Macomb Township.
As patrol cars converged on the address, police received updated information that the suspect was now walking away and on nearby Canvasback Drive. The first-arriving deputy parked his patrol car, walked up on foot and made contact with the suspect, who he ordered to stop, Wickersham said. The suspect ignored the officer, jumped into a nearby vehicle and sped away, striking the deputy in the process.
Wickersham said the deputy fired two rounds at the vehicle as the suspect continued to drive into an adjoining subdivision. As other deputies arrived, a chase occurred on residential streets in the Valley Forge Subdivision, near 22 Mile and Romeo Plank roads.
The pursuit ended when the suspect, a 26-year-old Macomb Township man, crashed his car into a K-9 police cruiser. He was taken into custody without further incident.
The suspect received a gunshot wound to the arm, and was treated at a local hospital before being released. The deputy, described as a 19-year veteran of the department, wasn't injured in the shooting.
Wickersham said the suspect, who was not named, faces numerous felony charges at his pending arraignment.
Police are investigating whether the incident is related to several reports of stolen residential sprinkler-system control valves in the county. Police say there have been 40 such complaints over the last month alone.
The incident remains under investigation.
