M-39 Construction Project Winding Down
SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - The end is in sight for one of the year's biggest construction headaches. WWJ's Ron Dewey reports that no one ever complains when roadwork is finished early, and this will be no exception.
The Southfield Freeway is expected to reopen to traffic a couple of weeks ahead of schedule; mid-October instead of the end of the month, closer to Halloween.
M-DOT officials say the work is 80 percent completed: rebuilding the roadways, lighting, drainage, 2 dozen bridges, median walls. Since mid-May, the project has shut down the Southfield Freeway from the Lodge to I-96 and has otherwise kept traffic to one lane all the way to Allen Park.
The good news is the freeway will reopen a couple of weeks ahead of schedule, but that's still about a month away. Nevertheless, drivers can rejoice in knowing the dreaded M-39 construction project is winding down.
