LTU Gets $750k In-Kind Software Grant From Tooling Software Technology

SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) -- TST Tooling Software Technology LLC of Clarkston and Vero Software of Gloucestershire, United Kingdom, have made an in- kind grant of Edgecam software with a retail value of $750,000 to Lawrence Technological University.

Edgecam is a Vero product distributed by TST. It is a computer-aided manufacturing software package that interfaces with almost all computer-aided design products, allowing students to design in Catia, Solidworks, NX, and AutoCAD. Edgecam imports the designs with no additional translation required, providing an environment where tools and machines are selected and configured.

The part is modeled, the manufacturing process is simulated, and the code for the machine is generated to drive the production in LTU's machine and fabrication shop. The CNC and water-jet machines are pre-programmed into the software, enabling seamless interface between any of the CAD systems used on LTU's campus.

This in-kind grant gives LTU students access to the same technology that many manufacturing companies around the world use every day to machine components that are used in a wide variety of industries including automotive, aerospace, defense, machinery, medical, high-tech, and electronics.

"This product will be very helpful to the mechanical engineering students tasked with producing, machining and fabricating parts for class projects," says Assistant Professor Ahad Ali of LTU's A. Leon Linton Department of
Mechanical Engineering.

In addition, LTU's Blue Devil Motorsports teams can use the software to create some of the parts needed to assemble their vehicles for international competitions.

"Giving students access to Edgecam will provide them a skill that will be valuable as they enter the workforce," says TST representative Mark Oakes. "Using Edgecam combines the power of sophisticated toolpath generation with seamless CAD integration, accelerating time to market with true knowledge-based machining."
