Low-Income Housing Repair Program Ending In Kalkaska

KALKASKA, Mich. (AP) - Low-income residents in the northern Michigan community of Kalkaska will have to look elsewhere for support in fixing up dilapidated homes.

Kalkaska County commissioners voted unanimously last month to dissolve the county's housing commission, the organization that applied for Community Development Block Grant money it then loaned out to homeowners in need of home repairs.

Kristin Brady, community services director for the Northwestern Michigan Community Action Agency, says there are "lots of health and safety issues that we've addressed in the past that will just go undone."

The Traverse City Record-Eagle reports 11 Kalkaska residents who applied for loans are affected.

Michigan State Housing Development Authority records say Kalkaska residents were awarded more than $1.3 million in Community Development Block Grant home repair loans in the last 15 years.
