Longest Heat Waves In Detroit
The thermometer broke triple digits for the first time since 1995 on Thursday, July 21, in Detroit, Monroe, Adrian, Grosse Isle and Ypsilanti. That brings the tally to six days of excessive heat.
As the extreme heat has started to cool down -- where does it stack up in relation to historical scorchers? The local NWS office has crunched the numbers.
In case you didn't know -- a heat wave is a string of five days reaching 90 degrees or higher, or three days reaching 95 or higher.
With Friday and Saturday surely to increase the tally -- this heat wave is bound to be in the top two or three in the Detroit record books.
The second longest heat wave in Detroit ended on July 25, 1987. It was eight days long and happened five additional times previously.
The longest heat wave ended on September 4th, 1953 after 11 grueling days!
