Long Lines, Computer Glitches, More, Fail To Deter Metro Detroit Voters
EASTPOINTE (WWJ) Kevin Nixon told WWJ Newsradio 950 when he got to Precinct 7 in Eastpointe, the lines were out the door and around the building.
Computer problems are reportedly to blame for the excessive lines.
Nixon says he timed his wait to vote -- two hours and 14 minutes from the time he got in line to the time he finished casting his ballot. But that didn't deter him.
"Oh, I'm not getting out of that line, there was no way I was going to leave," he told WWJ Newsradio 950. "I was determined to stay and vote, it's too important."
Dixon says there were nearly 200 people in line in front of him. WWJ has left messages for the city clerk, which have not yet been returned.
Another voter in Romulus complained there were 150 people in line in front of him and it took him more than two hours to vote. "This waste of my valuable time is an outrage!" he wrote in an email to WWJ. "Should I send you or the city a bill for my time?"
A few Twitter users also said the lines were long.
Macomb County Clerk Carmella Sabaugh told the Macomb Daily she was "very happy with the amazing turnout at the polls -- thus far," adding she expected voter turnout to be between 68 and 70 percent.
"I don't know now. It very well could be higher," she added.
Motor City Muckraker blogger Steve Neavling is rounding up reported issues in Detroit, from broken ballot machines to Trump supporters in camouflage allegedly intimidating voters at one precinct, to disorganized poll workers and missing privacy screens.
"Voting problems could hurt Hillary Clinton in Detroit, where she is overwhelmingly favored," Neavling wrote.
