Locker Room Fire Forces Detroit School Closure
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A firecracker set off by a Detroit third-grader sparked a small blaze in his school's locker room, forcing a two-day building closure.
Education Achievement Authority spokeswoman Chrystal Wilson says no one was hurt in Wednesday morning's fire at Murphy Elementary, which was evacuated. The school is located on Fenkell, on the city's west side.
The boy's locker room suffered smoke and water damage. The fire was contained to the locker room.
School was canceled Wednesday and will remain closed Thursday. No classes are scheduled Friday due to staff professional development training.
The Detroit Fire Department was investigating.
The Education Achievement Authority operates 15 low-performing schools in Detroit.
