Local Soldiers Heading To Kuwait
More than 300 Michigan Army National Guard soldiers were saying goodbye to family and friends Saturday afternoon as they prepared to deploy to the mideast.
Members from the 1st Battalion, 182nd Field Artillery unit will head to Fort McCoy for training before flying to Kuwait for a 12-month tour of duty as part of Operation New Dawn.
While in Kuwait, the unit will "establish command and control of subordinate units and perform security forces operations in northern and southern Kuwait," according to the Michigan National Guard.
A departure ceremony was planned for Saturday afternoon at Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit.
The National Guard says more than 1,000 Michigan soldiers and airmen are
deployed across the globe in support of the global war on terrorism.
