Local Security Agencies On Alert Ahead Of 9/11
DETROIT (WWJ) - As the 10th anniversary of 9/11 approaches, local agencies are on alert to make sure Metro Detroit remains safe.
In Detroit, Police Chief Ralph Godbee said places like the Ambassador Bridge and other high-profile locations have not been ignored.
"I think that we have a very robust relationship in those areas to the extent that those conversations are not just coming to surface now, but they have been ongoing for the past several months," Godbee said.
Godbee said security briefings have been on going on at a local, state and national level for some time.
"The information that is coming in, that law enforcement is tracking, is felt to be credible ... however, I don't think it's anything that people should go overboard, relative to not going on with their daily lives," said Godbee.
James Buford, Director of Homeland Security for Wayne County, told WWJ Newsradio 950 that an important part of their job is to stay in touch with the authorities.
"One of the key things that we do is that we make contact with our local law enforcement and other public safety officials throughout the county and let them know of any information that we have," Buford said.
Buford said because there has not be an elevation of the National Terrorism Advisory System, they will not be adding extra staffers this weekend.
However, Buford wants to assure citizens his department is prepared to access the county's emergency operations center very quickly in the event of an incident.
