Local Red Cross Aiding Japanese Relief Efforts
DETROIT (WWJ) - As rescue and recovery efforts continue in Japan following the massive earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis of just over a week ago, what is the Red Cross doing to help?
Speaking live on WWJ Newsradio 950, Southeast Michigan Disaster Relief Spokeswoman Allison Koenigbauer says their focus right now is on helping the elderly.
"In the evacuation centers, they're seeing mostly elderly people coming in," Koenigbauer told WWJ's Mike Campbell. "They're ill with a couple of different viruses, um, flu ... there's been a, um, intestinal virus that's going around - so a lot of the medical teams are trying to assist the elderly."
Koenigbauer says getting fuel to evacuation centers and to people out in the field is also a problem, but they're using whatever modes of transportation they can -- including bicycles -- to reach people in need.
