Local Reaction To bin Laden's Death
DEARBORN (WWJ) - Reaction pouring in from metro Detroit and around the world, following President Obama's late-night announcement of the death of Osama bin Laden.
And that's certainly the case in Dearborn. That's where WWJ's Ron Dewey traveled in order to get reaction from local residents:
Ron caught up with Ali Budawy, the owner of Prestige Cafe and Grill on Greenfield Road, and several of his customers. Budawy told Ron they had been up all night watching the news, getting the details on what they call a reason to celebrate.
"We are tired, but as you see, we're still watching," Budawy said. "I mean time is coming, you know, it's a holiday, let's put it that way. It's a holiday to us. It's a holiday to the families that ... lost their fathers, mothers, uh brothers, you know. And really, we want to be next to each other and celebrate on this day."
Budawy says bin Laden does not represent Muslims or Arab Americans, calling him a mass killer.
Callers to the WWJ Listen Line, meanwhile, were mostly relieved that bin Laden had been killed in Pakistan. Following are some of the comments that came in Monday morning:
"A great feather in the cap of the American people."
"I would love to see the pictures of bin Laden's body.
"Amazing it took 'em that long; that hard of a fight to get one man."
"One minute they kill 'em, two hours later he's buried. I think it's just to get our attention away from other things that are going on right now."
"Thank God. God bless America."
