OAK PARK (WWJ) - Voters go in different directions in millage elections in Oak Park and Romulus.
Voters in Romulus rejected a two and three-quarters millage for parks and recreation and the public library. Romulus Mayor Alan Lambert said they were very open from the start about what could happen if the proposal was turned down. Facing a 1.6 million dollar deficit, Romulus may now be forced to close the library and some city parks.
In a written statement following the election, Lambert said, "The City of Romulus has no choice but to make even more devastating cuts to services across our community, on top of the many cuts the city has made in the past year to address our budget situation. The City of Romulus respects the wishes of the voters. These are tough times and we are aware that families across our community are tightening their belts. The City of Romulus will do what we must to tighten our belts even further as well."
However, in Oak Park, voters approved three millage increases by substantial margins. The money will be used for public safety, library operations and recreational programs.
In other local election results, chalk up a win for one school district but a loss for another.
The winner is Fraser Public Schools, where voters gave a thumbs-up to a nearly $20 million bond proposal to make technology upgrades and building improvements, like a new cafeteria at Eisenhower Elementary.
But, voters rejected a $25.5 million bond for Lake Orion Community Schools. The no vote was emphatic.
Meantime, in the Huron District in New Boston, voters approved a $6.6 million proposal, and in the Woodhaven-Brownstown District, a millage renewal that will not boost taxes got a yes vote.
An attempt to recall the treasurer of Armada Township, Shannon Sheldon, passed overwhelmingly. Voters recalled Sheldon for his decision to vote against a request by the fire department to upgrade services from basic to advanced life support.
