As the Detroit Lions continued preparing to open their season against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, the team announced Friday the players selected by their peers as the 2013 team captains.
Ndamukong Suh said earlier in the week that he would be lying if he said he did not want to be a captain, and his teammates granted that desire. Suh, in his third season with the team, has his share of immature moments in the past, but many players have said Suh has grown and stepped into a leadership capacity this season.
Along with Suh, the 2013 captains are wide receiver Calvin Johnson, quarterback Matthew Stafford, linebacker Stephen Tulloch, defensive back John Wendling and kicker David Akers.
Everyone except Akers has been with the Lions for multiple years, but Akers is a venerable veteran, one of the best-known kickers in the league and entering his 14th NFL season.
