Leaving Behind The Bottom Five Percent
School districts around the state are "doing the math" this month, and the bottom five percent of high schools in the state will face some difficult choices, thanks to changes in Federal and State education policy.
While "No Child Left Behind" focused attention on getting all schools to raise test scores for all students, the Obama administration has shifted its focus.
The education policy focuses on closing or reforming the worst performing schools, especially those that produce a high proportion of dropouts.
Schools in this bottom five percent will need to close, become a charter school, hire new staff members, remove their principal, or present a plan to transform their building.
