Learn To Be A Severe Weather Spotter
SOUTHFIELD (WWJ) - Want to become a severe weather spotter?
The National Weather Service is holding Skywarn Spotter Training classes this Spring in southeast Michigan.
"We'll be teaching people what to look for in the skies that may tell of severe weather as it approaches them. Then as the severe weather hits, we teach them what to report to the Weather Service and how to report that information to us," says Rich Pollman, who's with the Service's White Lake location.
He adds, "With all our great technology, with the radar, and our networks of observations, we still need those spotters to basically tell us what's happening below the cloud level. The radar is great at seeing what's happening at the cloud level. We see rotation there at the cloud level. The hail and the wind, within the clouds. And how that translates to the ground. That's where the spotters come in."
But Pollman says the most important thing they will be teaching is weather safety.
The classes are free and open to the public.
