Lead-Tainted Water Lines Replaced In About 50 Flint Homes
FLINT (AP) -- About 50 more homes in Flint have had lead-tainted water lines replaced as part of Mayor Karen Weaver's FAST Start initiative.
The Flint Journal reports that FAST Start coordinator Michael McDaniel said Monday that the city is on track to replace 10 to 12 lines daily over the project's second phase.
The work is part of efforts to correct the city's lead-tainted water crisis and includes removal of service lines made of lead and galvanized steel.
Flint was under state financial control in 2014 when it switched from Detroit's water system to the Flint River to save money. Officials failed to treat the river water with corrosion-control chemicals which allowed lead to leach from pipes into homes, and tests later showed high lead levels in some Flint children.
