Lawyers For Bridge Execs Challenge Judge's Order
DETROIT (WWJ) - Attorneys for embattled Ambassador Bridge executives are working to keep them out of jail for good.
Earlier this month, Wayne County Judge Prentis Edwards ruled that bridge owner Manuel "Matty" Moroun and Bridge President Dan Stamper should be locked up for as long as it takes to fix the roads at the base of the bridge. And Friday, lawyers for Moroun and Stamper filed an appeal with the State Appeals Court stating that the judge's order is unconstitutional.
The two spent a night in jail for contempt of court following a lengthy squabble over the Gateway construction project.
Officials with the Michigan Department of Transportation said the project should have connected the bridge to the freeways and needs to be redone, while Stamper maintains the Detroit International Bridge Co. cannot continue their work without MDOT's help.
Both men are free pending the appeal.
