Law Firm, Red Wings, Comerica Bank Donating Smoke Detectors
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Fire Departments in Detroit, Oakland, Wayne and Macomb counties will get hundreds of new smoke detectors -- compliments of a local law firm, the Detroit Red Wings and Comerica Bank.
The formal announcement that firm Fabian, Sklar & King is donating 500 smoke detectors to the Detroit Fire Department will take place Thursday in Detroit.
The Farmington Hills-based firm says it will donate 10-year sealed lithium battery smoke detectors. As a result, Detroit residents can receive a free smoke detector personally installed by a firefighter. This marks the third year Fabian, Sklar & King has partnered with the department to donate 500 smoke detectors.
The Detroit Red Wings and Comerica Bank are also teaming up to collect new smoke detectors for low-income families and elderly citizens across southeast Michigan as part of the team's 11th Annual Smoke Detector Collection presented by Comerica.
The collection begins Tuesday, Oct. 9, with the start of National Fire Prevention Week, and runs through Friday, Nov. 16.
Comerica customers can drop smoke detectors into specially marked boxes at more than 140 Comerica banking centers and office buildings in southeast Michigan. To find a Comerica Bank location near you, click HERE.
All donated smoke detectors will be distributed through fire departments in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties. Local fire officials will provide smoke detectors to low-income families as well as elderly and disabled members of the community.
"Fire prevention is a very important cause and we're pleased to partner with Comerica on this initiative," said Olympia Entertainment President & CEO Tom Wilson. "The Red Wings organization prides itself on giving back to the community and we're delighted that this smoke detector collection will help protect disadvantaged Metro Detroit residents."
The smoke detector collection at Comerica banking centers is in addition to collections at Detroit Red Wings games at Joe Louis Arena. The annual Smoke Detector Collection began in 2001 in memory of former Red Wings player Brendan Shanahan's father, who was a firefighter. Since the program's inception, the Red Wings have distributed more than 19,500 smoke detectors to local fire departments and agencies, including 5,065 smoke detectors in 2011.
