Lansing Man Sentenced In Shooting Death Of Brother During Drunken Argument
LANSING (AP) - A Lansing man who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the shooting death of his brother has been sentenced to at least 18 years in prison.
The Lansing State Journal reports the punishment handed down Wednesday was the minimum sentence recommended as part of a plea agreement reached in October between prosecutors and the attorney for 33-year-old Rahsohn Perry.
The sentence calls for up to 35 years in prison.
Perry was charged in the death of 39-year-old Michael Jimenez, who was shot in the head on Nov, 8, 2014.
In testimony, witnesses said Perry and Jimenez were in a physical struggle that led to the shooting at the brothers' friend's home in the 300-block of Martin Luther King Blvd.
At the time of the shooting Perry had recently been released from jail in connection with a separate incident.
The friend, Chris Hugger, testified that the fight broke out after a night of drinking. He said Perry was upset that Jimenez got married and was driving a Cadillac Escalade while he was in jail — and that he wouldn't add money to Perry's jail account.
Perry's attorney has said the case's key issue was whether Perry shot Jimenez in self-defense. Hugger said Jimenez was unarmed.
