Labor Group, Congressmen Show Support For American Jobs Act
DETROIT (WWJ) - A partnership of labor and environmental groups called the Blue Green Alliance announced its support for President Barack Obama's jobs plan on Wednesday in Detroit.
The group was joined by Democratic Congressman Hansen Clarke, who called the American Jobs Act a "win-win" situation.
"We can create jobs while lowering our energy costs and making the air that we breathe a lot more cleaner. So, that's why I'm promoting the President's job initiative," said Clarke.
Democratic Congressman John Conyers encouraged the Blue Green Alliance to take their message to every congressional district in the state.
"I would like us to go into each congressional district and invite the member to share his views with where Jobs21 and the Blue Green Alliance is in terms of their perspective, because that's how we're going to get the Obama jobs bill moving," said Conyers.
American Federation of Teachers Michigan President David Hecker said the American Jobs Act will modernize Michigan schools while creating jobs at the same time.
"The American Jobs Act would invest $25 billion in K-12 schools, and an additional $5 billion in our community colleges. The investment in K-12 schools would create over 300,000 jobs in this country and provide economic benefits for a host of industries," said Hecker.
The President's jobs plan includes investments in schools and transportation, as well as making high-speed wireless Internet available to at least 98 percent of Americans.
Obama's jobs plan has failed to win the support of the Republican dominated House of Representatives, who say it is too costly.
