Kronk Gym Boxer Wins World Championship
DETROIT (WWJ) - A boxer from Detroit's legendary Kronk Gym is now a world champion.
Andy Lee won the North America Boxing Association and Federation middleweight belts Wednesday night with a unanimous decision over Alex Bunema.
As happy as Lee is about his win, he's looking ahead to beat the one person who ever bested him in the ring, Brian Vera.
"For me, I'm a very competitive person, and everyday I think about the fight and what I could have done to make it different or what I could have changed in the fight to have a different outcome. But, it just wasn't meant to be that day and he was a better man," Lee said.
Lee, who now has a record of 26 and 1 with 19 knockouts, lost his only fight from a technical KO at the hands of Vera.
The Gaelic League in Detroit will host a party tonight honoring Lee, who is a native of Limerick, Ireland.
Lee is currently ranked #3 in the World Boxing Association, #9 in the World Boxing Council and #13 in the World Boxing Organization.
