Kroger Pulls Unrefrigerated Caramel Apples From Shelves Due To Listeria Concern
DETROIT (WWJ) -- Concerns over listeria have caused Kroger to pull unrefrigerated caramel apples from store shelves.
The move comes after a study by the American Society of Microbiology showed the tasty treats were at risk for contamination if they were left at room temperature. The juice from the apple could get trapped under the caramel and create a perfect environment for the bacteria to grow.
No illnesses have been reported in connection with the products, but Kroger made its decision out of an abundance of caution after reviewing the online study.
"After reviewing the study, we have decided to voluntarily withdraw unrefrigerated caramel apples from our stores," said Dr. Payton Pruett, Kroger's vice president of food safety. "While we believe the potential health risk is minimal, we are acting out of an abundance of caution on behalf of our customers."
The Kroger family of stores has pulled the products from shelves and distribution centers and has disposed of them.
A listeria outbreak killed three people after they ate tainted Blue Bell Ice Cream earlier this year.
