Know Your Rights When It Comes To Harassing Bill Collector Calls

DETROIT (WWJ) - A civil litigation attorney Mark Frankel deals with both sides of the issue.

A collection agency can legally call you at work, but if they're calling 15 times a day and you don't want them to, you need to know how to respond.

"Your response should be, 'don't call me here, it's not appropriate, you'll cause me to lose my job, stop it,'" says Frankel.

Under both federal and state law they can not call you at work anymore. If they ignore you they're violating the law.

"You could bring an action against them to stop, in which case they would have to pay your attorney fees and maybe some damages. You could even go, if it happens a number of times, to the Michigan Attorney General and complain and the Michigan Attorney General will do an investigation and give them a cease and desist order, and tell them to knock it off," says Frankel.

The very least that can happen to the collector is that they can get fined for continuing to call you at work.
