Kitten Rescued From Pipe At U.S.-Canada Border
DETROIT (WWJ) - A kitten that found itself trapped between nations has been rescued.
The Michigan Humane Society Rescue Department responded after a concerned citizen called to report hearing animal sounds from a plastic pipe near the Ambassador Bridge at the U.S.-Canadian border.
A first rescue attempt failed, prompting team member Chris Ouwerkerk to open an adjacent sewer cover and climb in to bring the kitten to safety.
"I wasn't able to pull the cat out from the opening," Ouwerkerk said. "My decision was to break the cement around the sewer lid and get into the sewer so that way I could see the kitten and I could grab it safely."
The 5-week-old kitten, who MHS named Alberta, will be in a foster home for weight gain before she is available for adoption.
"The kitten is currently recovering from being stuck in the pipe," Ouwerkerk said. "Rescues like this are only possible through your support and donations."
