Kilpatrick's Release Date Pushed Back
DETROIT (WWJ) - It looks like former Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick will be in jail a little longer than expected.
A spokesman for the Michigan Department of Corrections tells WWJ Newsradio 950 that Kilpatrick will likely be released in early August, rather than late July.
Russ Marlan said his office is still working to finalize details with the Texas Department of Corrections, which will eventually oversee Kilpatrick's parole. As a condition of his parole, Kilpatrick must live in Texas.
Kilpatrick has already served more than a year behind bars. He pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice in 2008 after he lied on the stand about an affair with his then chief of staff, Christine Beatty. He ended up in prison in May 2010 after said he violated his parole by failing to honestly disclose his assets while owning the city $1 million in restitution
Meantime, Kilpatrick still faces trial in 2012 on unrelated federal corruption charges, accused of taking kickbacks and bribes in exchange for city contracts.
