Kidnapping, Police Shootout In Roseville
ROSEVILLE (WWJ) - A Sterling Heights man faces kidnapping and attempted murder charges after being shot and wounded in a gun battle with police.
Roseville Police Chief Michael Pachla says it all started when their neighbors in St. Clair Shores tried to stop a van which didn't, and led officers on a chase into Roseville. The van crashed, the suspect took off on foot, jumping fences across backyards, all the while with police on his tail. A canine unit tracked him down to another van sitting in the driveway of a house.
"The subject put his hand up to show the officer that he had nothing in his hand, but he refused to show his right hand," Pachla told WWJ's Ron Dewey. "The officer then ordered him again to show his other hand. At this time, he pulled it out and it was a handgun in his hand. He fired at the officer, and the officers returned fire several times, striking him."
Police say the 21-year-old Sterling Heights man, who allegedly kidnapped his girlfriend earlier that night, had the woman with him at the time of the car chase, and may also have an outstanding warrant for home invasion from Shelby Township. The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was last reported in serious condition.
Michael Martin was on the job as a tow truck driver for a neighboring police department when he heard what was happening on his street.
"That's scary. That's real scary," Martin said. "Like I said, it's a quiet neighborhood. This just don't happen over here."
The victim was not injured.
