Khang: Mayweather Vs. Pacquiao Will Never Happen
If you've ever watched the cartoon Peanuts then you know that every time Lucy holds the football for Charlie Brown to kick it she ends up pulling it away at the very last second. Every time.
Keep that in mind when you hear that longtime Floyd Mayweather advisor Leonard Ellerbe told Dan Rafael of ESPN "Floyd made it very clear that he wants to give the fans the biggest fights that are out there. He wants to stay active. We're going to do everything in our power to make the biggest fight out there for the fans and we all know what the fight is. We're looking to make the biggest fight possible and everyone knows what that fight is, the little fella."
A lot of the boxing game is talk. A lot of it. So forgive me if I don't get my hopes up right away. Mayweather's team has the MGM Arena and the May 5, 2012, date on hold but no opponent. Just because this is the fight boxing fans having been begging for doesn't mean it's going to happen.
Mayweather may be fighting May 5, 2012, but there's no guarantee it will be Manny Pacquiao. Pacquiao hasn't lost a fight in six years and nearly all of his opponents have been beaten badly and sent to the hospital. Would that happen to Mayweather if they fought? Who knows? But does Mayweather really want to find out? Or would he really have any reason to want to?
Mayweather has never been beaten in his professional career and, call me crazy, but I think he likes being able to say no one has ever defeated him. It's his biggest argument in claiming he is the greatest of all time. What I'm saying is Mayweather has no reason to fight Pacquiao. He's undefeated.
He doesn't want to take a punishment. And he doesn't need the money. Even though this would be the highest grossing pay-per-view boxing event of all time, there's only one real reason these two should fight -- and that is to finally see who is the best boxer of this generation. And if they don't fight soon NEITHER boxer will ever be able to rightfully claim that title. Unfortunately I don't think that day will ever come.
