Kalamazoo May Have Had Tornado Touch Down
DETROIT (WWJ) - The National Weather Service is sending a team out Monday morning to look into a possible tornado touching down in Kalamazoo County.
George Wetzel with the National Weather Service in Grand Rapids says no matter what it was, the winds were strong enough to be destructive.
"We received some information that a house had taken a pretty good hit, whether it was straight-line winds or tornadic we are not sure yet," says Wetzel.
Wetzel says that the area has seen numerous downed trees and power lines come down.
"A bo-echo pushes the winds in one direction, whereas a tornado will throw the winds everywhere," notes Wetzel.
"A thunderstorm kind of collapses on itself and it pushes the wind out away from it. That produces straight line winds, since they are not moving in all directions like a tornado they may not be as destructive, but they are not as destructive," adds Wetzel.
