Teen in critical condition after shooting at Southfield hotel; 15-year-old taken into custody
(CBS DETROIT) - A 15-year-old boy from Ferndale is in critical condition after he was allegedly shot by a 15-year-old at a hotel in Southfield Sunday morning.
The Southfield Police Department says at 8:42 a.m. on Feb. 11, officers and fire personnel were called to the Westin Hotel at 1500 Town Center after receiving a report of shots fired.
When they arrived, they found the teen suffering from a single gunshot wound to the head.
Life-threatening measures were administered at the scene, and he was taken to a local hospital, where he is listed in grave condition, police said.
An investigation revealed the victim, who is a student at Loyola High School in Detroit, was in a hotel room with two other juveniles when he was shot. They were in the hotel room unsupervised.
"We see these things play out time and time again, and the story remains the same. Where is the parental supervision, and then how do these teens get access to weapons," Southfield Chief of Police Elvin Barren said. "I classify this as something totally preventable."
Police found two guns in the waistband of one of the other juveniles, who has been identified as a 15-year-old Detroit resident. He was found with a stolen Glock that had an extended magazine and a laser light. The gun was reported stolen out of Flint in June 2022. He had an additional Glock with an extended magazine.
Police believe one of the weapons recovered was used in the shooting.
The 15-year-old from Detroit was taken into custody.
Barrens said the Southfield Police Department presented charges to the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office of two counts of carrying a concealed weapon. Additional charges could follow.
The third teen has been identified as a Southfield resident.
During the investigation, police discovered that an adult rented the hotel room for the teens and then turned it over to them. Police believe as many as five people were in the room at the time of the shooting.
