Jury Says Employer Not Responsible For Worker's Drunkeness
A federal jury in Detroit has ruled that the employer of a man imprisoned in the 2005 deaths of three members of a Farmington Hills family was not to blame for the triple fatal accident.
The jury ruled Thursday that UGS Corp., now Siemens, was not responsible for the actions of its former salesman, Thomas Wellinger.
He was sentenced to 19 to 30 years after pleading guilty to second-degree murder in the deaths of Judith Weinstein and her two sons.
Police say Wellinger's blood alcohol level was at 0.43 when his SUV slammed into the Weinsteins' car at 70 mph. That's more than five times the legal limit of intoxication.
Judith Weinstein's husband, Gary, sued UGS, claiming it allowed Wellinger to eave its Livonia office visibly drunk.
UGS says co-workers noticed no signs that Wellinger was intoxicated.
