Jury Picks In Home Stretch In Death Penalty Case
Lawyers in a federal death penalty case in Detroit are expected to settle on a jury this week after reducing the pool to fewer than 70 people.
Lawyers and U.S. District Judge Victoria Roberts spent much of June interviewing people for the trial of Timothy O'Reilly, who is charged with killing a man during a bank robbery in Dearborn in 2001.
The U.S. Justice Department told prosecutors to seek the death penalty if O'Reilly is convicted. The decision on death or life in prison would be up to the jury.
Norman Stephens was fatally shot while delivering cash to Dearborn Federal Credit Union. Opening statements in the trial could occur July 12.
Two other people still are awaiting trial and also face the death penalty if convicted.
