Jury Finds Lawmaker Guilty In Drunk Driving Case
EAST LANSING (WWJ/AP) - A Michigan lawmaker faces up to 93 days in jail, fines and community service after he was convicted Tuesday of misdemeanor operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
The East Lansing District Court jury decided the case of Republican state Rep. Bob Genetski, 45, of Saugatuck, who was ticketed Jan. 19 by a Michigan State University police officer. His blood-alcohol level was 0.08 percent an hour and a half after his arrest.
Genetski said a few days after his arrest that he was on his way to a motel after leaving the Capitol area when the officer stopped him for "driving slightly above the speed limit."
Genetsk, who is in his second House term, will be sentenced in 30 to 45 days.
"We're going to live with the outcome," defense attorney Mike Nichols told reporters after the verdict.
Ingham County Prosecutor Stuart J. Dunnings III said the prosecution's goal was a fair trial. He said the verdict's message is "don't drink and drive in Ingham County."
Genetski faces having up to six points added to his driving record; he currently has two points from an unrelated speeding ticket, The Holland Sentinel reported.
