Judge Won't Reduce Bond For Suspect In Child's Pregnancy
MOUNT CLEMENS (WWJ) - A Macomb County man accused of assaulting and impregnating his girlfriend's 11-year-old daughter remains behind bars after a motion to reduce his $1 million bond was denied.
Trevaun Cortez Brooks, 28, was arrested over the Labor Day weekend after failing to meet with investigators.
His defense attorney, Chris Aiello, said his client denies his involvement and the bond should be lower, given Brooks' only other brush with the law was over a marijuana issue.
"I think he's a great judge. I respect him, but I disagree with him on this issue. It should be $50,000 cash or surety," said Aiello. "But because of the publicity and every time we come out here everybody's out here, I think there's a heightened scrutiny on this case."
Aiello said results of a paternity test will be critical to his client's case.
Brooks, a janitor, worked briefly at the Mount Clemens charter school where the girl attended class. Police said he also lived with the girl and her mother. It's not clear how long he knew the victim's mother or how long they lived in together in her Mount Clemens home.
Brooks will remain in the Macomb County Jail until his next court hearing set for November 9.
The now 12-year-old girl and the baby are in the care of state services.
