Judge Suspended

A Wayne County judge has been suspended without pay for two weeks for dismissing at least 30 divorce cases solely to clean up his docket. The Michigan Judicial Tenure Commission says Judge Richard Halloran Jr. allowed the parties in many cases to keep litigating. He entered dismissals to avoid flunking a deadline for handling the cases.

The state Supreme Court ordered a suspension last week, although justices Stephen Markman, Maura Corrigan and Robert Young Jr. were in favor of something more severe.

Halloran declined to comment. His suspension kicks in later this month. Justice Elizabeth Weaver didn't participate in the matter.
