Judge: Something Smells In Flint Trash-Hauling Dispute
FLINT (AP) -- A Michigan city with lead in its water has another controversy: trash.
A Flint City Council member is suing Mayor Karen Weaver, who apparently is disregarding an 8-1 vote against giving the trash-hauling contract to Rizzo Environmental Services.
The council wants to keep Republic Services on the job. The Flint Journal reports that a contract with Republic expired Friday afternoon.
Judge Joseph Farah held a hearing Friday and told attorneys on both sides to return to court Tuesday. He says there's an "obnoxious stench of political intrigue" in the trash controversy.
City Administrator Sylvester Jones Jr. says the council appears interested only in "power and control."
Flint is trying to recover from lead-tainted tap water after water from the Flint River was not properly treated.
