Joe Donovan's Detroit History: It's War! And Detroit Is Ready To Fight

One hundred fifty years ago Detroiters clamored to join the Union Army to help defeat the Southern Rebels before the war ended in a few months, overflowing President Lincoln's Michigan quota.

Because the state was broke, Governor Austin Blair collected private contributions to raise $100,000 for guns and uniforms. His warning that the fighting would last much longer and be much tougher fell on deaf ears. The almost giddy April, 1861 volunteers soon were heading to defend Washington, D.C. and await orders to go on the attack.
