Jobs Plan Could Mean Nearly $350M For Detroit Schools
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - President Barack Obama's jobs plan could mean nearly $350 million for building renovations at Detroit Public Schools.
A designated $25 billion of the president's jobs package is set to go toward upgrading K through 12 schools around the nation, and nearly half of that money will go to the nation's largest districts that need it most. Detroit is ranked fourth neediest behind New York, LA and Chicago.
The President said the move will create construction jobs while giving kids a proper learning environment.
Obama unveiled his plan to jump-start the economy, called the "Americans Jobs Act," before a rare joint session of Congress last week. The plan is larger than many expected. More than half of the plan is comprised of tax cuts for working Americans and small businesses, and it also includes spending initiatives in other areas including infrastructure.
Before Congress, the President said he expects the so-called congressional "super committee" -- already tasked with finding at least $1.2 trillion in deficit savings -- to adopt some of the measures he'll propose to pay for the bill.
