Jobless Rates Fall Across Much Of Michigan In November
LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Unemployment figures have dropped in most of Michigan's regional labor markets, but have risen up north.
The state said Tuesday that Michigan's seasonally unadjusted jobless rate was at 7.8 percent in November. That's down from 8.3 percent in October. The rates were lower in 14 of the state's 17 major labor markets but up in three northern Michigan areas.
The Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget says the labor markets that saw unemployment rate increases were the Upper Peninsula, Northeast Lower Michigan and Northwest Lower Michigan.
The largest November drop of 0.8 of a percentage point was recorded in the Lansing-East Lansing, Muskegon-Norton Shores and Saginaw regions.
The biggest increase was from 10.8 percent to 11.7 percent in the Northeast Lower Michigan market.
Michigan's major labor market areas, their seasonally unadjusted jobless rates for November, followed by October:
- Michigan, 7.8 percent, compared with 8.3 percent.
- Ann Arbor, 5.3 percent, compared with 6 percent.
- Battle Creek, 6.5 percent, compared with 7.2 percent.
- Bay City, 7.9 percent, compared with 8.4 percent.
- Detroit-Warren-Livonia, 8.3 percent, compared with 9 percent.
- Flint, 9 percent, compared with 9.7 percent.
- Grand Rapids-Wyoming, 5.6 percent, compared with 6.3 percent.
- Holland-Grand Haven, 5.8 percent, compared with 6.4 percent.
- Jackson, 8 percent, compared with 8.6 percent.
- Kalamazoo-Portage, 6.7 percent, compared with 7.3 percent.
- Lansing-East Lansing, 6.3 percent, compared with 7.1 percent.
- Monroe, 7.3 percent, compared with 7.7 percent.
- Muskegon-Norton Shores, 7.9 percent, compared with 8.7 percent.
- Niles-Benton Harbor, 8.1 percent, compared with 8.6 percent.
- Saginaw-Saginaw Township North, 8.1 percent, compared with 8.9 percent.
- Upper Peninsula, 9 percent, compared with 8.6 percent.
- Northeast Lower Michigan, 11.7 percent, compared with 10.8 percent.
- Northwest Lower Michigan, 9.2 percent, compared with 9 percent.
