Jim Schwartz: Lions Need More Depth

The Lions' defensive starters played well in Saturday's exhibition opener at Pittsburgh.

Ndamukong Suh demanded double teams. Cliff Avril sacked quarterback Byron Leftwich. Kyle Vanden Bosch broke loose and harassed the QB. And the defensive backs kept the Steelers' receivers under wraps.

But that's only part of a winning formula. The Lions' defensive backups entered the game, gave up huge plays and looked very much like the worst-ranked defense that has played in Detroit the past three years.

The Lions need talented starters, but they also need backups who can fill in when injuries occur.
