It could have been a bigger deal -- Miguel Cabrera had just finished almost a week of playing on artificial turf and his back was feeling it so Jim Leyland felt compelled to give him his first day off of the season back when the Tigers were in Toronto last week. And, it worked out, Detroit won that game so nobody even talked about it.
OK, there was one guy...
"I was getting my ass chewed out in Toronto because some guy drove from Detroit for one game to see Miguel Cabrera play! He didn't play" Leyland said.
The man found the skipper in the team hotel lobby and let him have it.
"After I explained it to the guy, the guy was a great guy. His backs bad, he has to get off the turf, he needs to sit down for a day, I'm sorry. Ill reimburse you? I don't know what to tell you," Leyland said.
Leyland, remembering the conversation said the man came up and said "damn I'm mad at you, I said oh, welcome to my world buddy." The two ended up having a conversation and everything worked out, however, Leyland was talking up to a point...
"That's why at the end of the day, all the conversations we have, the only thing that matters is if the Tigers win or not. It doesn't matter who's playing , it doesn't matter who got the hit, all that matter is whether the Tigers won or not" Leyland said.
He's right, even if the guy that drove from Detroit to Toronto to see Cabrera doesn't feel that way.
