Jewish Film Festival: Over 40 Movies From Around The World
WEST BLOOMFIELD (WWJ) - More than 40 movies from around the world will begin screening on Sunday as part of this year's Film Festival put on by the Jewish Community Center of Metro Detroit.
Festival Chair Eric Lumberg says the movies are something you can't see at conventional theaters. One of the movies is an Israeli thriller.
"The movie is called "Seven Minutes In Heaven" it is not what you think. It is actually a very suspenseful, twisting feature about a girl who survives a bus-bombing in Israel," says Lumberg.
Another film getting a lot of buzz is a documentary about a man that might be one of the most accomplished people you have never heard of.
Hank Greenspun, the "firebrand" publisher of the "Las Vegas Sun" is the subject of a new documentary that premiers in Detroit Sunday. Scott Goldstein is the Hollywood director responsible for the film, " Where I Stand".
"I found footage of Hank that was spirited away in a vault in the Sinai Desert for twenty years, where he talks about his life. I thought this ...could be an eight-day series," says Goldstein.
Hank Greenspun was Bugsy Seigel's public relations guy, he was a gun runner for Israel, and went after Joe McCarthy and brought Howard Hughes to Las Vegas.
"He started the "Las Vegas Sun", (he) went after Pat McCarran, the biggest politician in the state and brought down the McCarran political machine. He then went after Sen. Joe McCarthy and for his efforts, actually was indicted for incitement to murder McCarthy," says Goldstein.
The films will be shown at the Jewish Community Center in West Bloomfield and at Birmingham's Uptown Palladium May 15th through the 26th.
