Jailed Ambassador Bridge Owner Files 2nd Appeal
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Lawyers for two jailed Ambassador Bridge executives are trying again to win their release at the Michigan appeals court.
A three-judge panel turned down the request Thursday night after attorneys cited the wrong law. The case was refiled Friday. (View court documents).
Bridge owner billionaire Manuel "Matty" Moroun and bridge company executive Dan Stamper were sent to jail Thursday as punishment for the company being found in contempt of court. The dispute centers on a major construction project that is supposed to connect the international bridge to area interstates.
Stamper and Moroun want to be released while a full appeal can be pursued.
Wayne County Judge Prentis Edwards says Detroit International Bridge Co. repeatedly failed to follow his orders to work with the state of Michigan and get the Gateway Project done.
Moroun's son Matthew Moroun said his father and others at the company had tried their best, repeatedly asking Judge Edwards' to clarify his order and to visit the construction site and offer further details about what must be done. Speaking to WWJ Newsradio 950 on Thursday, Moroun also expressed concern for the well being of his incarcerated father, who is 84-year-old. (Listen to the interview, here).
