Izzo Or Beilein? Dick Vitale Makes A Tough Pick
Talking to Dick Vitale is always a treat. Ask a question, you get an answer even if it sounds like a filibuster. He has a new book out called "Awesome Baby" in which he talks about his early days coaching both the University of Detroit and the Detroit Pistons. He reveals in the book that it was Pistons owner Bill Davidson who made the ill-fated decision to trade a number one pick for Bob McAdoo. Vitale told me, "Mr.Davidson fired me with respect and was always very good to me."
He also told me that if he went back to coaching he would have died by the time he was 50 because he, "physically could not handle the losses."
I asked him to pick between Tom Izzo and John Beilein to coach one game. "You are putting me on the spot, but since we are both paisans I have to go with my Mr. Izzo," said Vitale. He expanded on the "one and done" rule in college basketball, which he detests.
The book is an easy but informative read in which all proceeds go to his charity to cure pediatric cancer. "Awesome Baby", is not just a new book it's a way to describe Dick Vitale.
